Lorwyn Eclipsed Spotlight Saturday Briefing Welcome to Lorwyn Eclipsed Spotlight series Day 1! We have around 1800 players, so be ready for a raucous weekend, and an event to eclipse (hah!) all others. I’m Abe Corson, and I’ll be this tournament's head judge. Also, let’s face (to face) it- this will be a long document, and Tobi says y’all have to read the whole thing. But on the bright side, there’s almost a whole week before the event starts to do that. You can read it on the plane! You can read it on the train! Okay, enough of that, already. Saturday Timelines Note the following general timeline of events. Saturday Timeline of Tournament Tasks Breaks Schedule … is TBD. Teams will take breaks as a team (with the exception of the features team) according to specific rounds and will coordinate responsibilities with another designated team while they are gone. Check the judge schedule later this week for this info. Main Event Teams We’re gonna do a quick run down of team responsibilities here so everyone can get the gist of what they might be doing. Note that your team lead will be in charge of your specific assignments, so please wait for communication from them before locking in. However, if you are a team lead, then please read over your team’s section carefully, as there may be some assignments in there you didn’t know you had. General Event information To record time extensions, please both input these into PurpleFox and also leave a completed time extension slip on the table. We ask that you do not drop players in any software, and instead assist players dropping themselves in Melee. Otherwise, bring a drop slip with the name of the present player and the table number to the scorekeeper. If you have an HCE or non-simple backup please check with another m TL (even if you are a TL). If you have a non-tardiness game loss, a very weird situation, or an investigation, please find a head judge. Product Distribution Phase Tips Product (preregistered kits) should be distributed according to instructions from the Product team by way of your team lead. All judges should take several pocketfulls pens with them during distro. Players may ask for these at this time, and judges should hand these out freely. Please be aware that product kits will come with a preregistered pool, a deck list, and the event promo. The event will use differently colored lists corresponding to different sections of the player meeting in order to aid in list sorting. Each team should ensure that it has kits corresponding to the correctly colored section before distribution begins. Do not distribute kits to empty seats. Return any extra product to the product team after the player meeting has begun. If an item is missing- such as the promo, or the decklist, please escalate to a head judge instead of taking any other action. Pool Verification Phase Tips After distro is confirmed, there will be a 5 to 10 minute verification period where all players will be instructed to pass their pools and lists to the player across to verify correct registration. If a late player arrives at this time, they should be directed to the late player seating area instead of their assigned seat. During this phase, we will ask players to write their name in the appropriate section of the list. We will ask verifying players to write their name on the bottom of the list (in the margins). We will also ask players to write their table number on their list at this time. Note that despite the placement of the number box in the middle of the list, we will be instructing players to write their table number in the upper right corner of the list (above the spotlight series logo). If a player does not have someone directly across from them, please proactively arrange for 3-person exchanges with nearby players. If a discrepancy with the pool is identified during this phase, please make the correction on the decklist. Cross out and/or write in missing or extraneous counts and card names. Please mark any of these changes with your initials. You may use any color pen for this. Build Phase Tips Players will have 30 minutes for build. If a late player arrives at this time, they should be directed to the late player seating area instead of their assigned seat. Please be aware that several different tasks will be completed during the build phase. These include: ● Basic land brick distribution (product team) ● Trash pickup (all judges) ● Pool discrepancy resolution (all judges) ● List collection (all judges) If a player first brings a pool discrepancy to our attention at this time, please check with the player who performed the verification to confirm. If an unregistered card is present, show it to the confirming player and ask if they recall seeing it. If that player says that they might have missed this error, please make the correction (see pool verification tips section for more details). If they say that they did not, or if you are suspicious of the situation, please involve a head judge. Players may wish to make changes to their registered deck. Please instruct players to make these changes legibly, but no judge sign-off is needed. List Collection Tips Any judge in the area can and should collect a completed list. When doing so, judges should check for the following things: ● The player recorded their name on the appropriate line ● The player wrote the table number in the upper-right corner of the list (and not just in the box) ● The player registered basic lands If any of these things are missing, it is important to return the list right away and ask the player to fix this. Players may wish to take a photo of their list before turning it in, and they may do so at this time. Collected lists will be taken by judges to list drop off stations set up by the Deck Lists team. At end of time in build, judges should proactively pick up lists from their assigned sections. If a player is still registering their deck at this time, advise them that you will be back once all other lists in the section are picked up. If players are still not ready at this point, and still need longer than a minute or two to complete registration, they should be assigned a game loss for tardiness and instructed to turn in their lists at the main event stage by the end of the 10 minute break. Please record the names of these players and get them to the Deck Check team for handling. During this time, some players who have already turned in their list may approach the main stage to report possible problems or ask questions about their decklists. These players should be directed to the Deck Lists team for assistance. We will allow any players who failed to register their basic lands to do so at this time with no penalty. Players may add, swap, or remove basic lands (provided the deck stays above 40 cards), also with no penalty. Players may do this until round 1 pairings are posted. Players may not change the content of any other card in their registered deck at this time. If this means that the player has an illegal list (due to registering only a 39 card deck and failing to register a non-basic), then the Deck Lists team should follow the normal Deck List Problem process, make the change, and record the name of the impacted player to be passed off to the Deck Checks team for handling. Note that judges may proactively offer to allow players to instead add any number of basic lands to their deck and list with no penalty (see previous paragraph), in order to get any otherwise illegal list up to the 40-card minimum. The grace period for changing basic lands ends once round 1 pairings are posted. 10 Minute Break Phase Tips Immediately following build, there will be a scheduled 10 minute break. Players may use this time to use the bathroom, buy sleeves, leave the hall, etc. Players may at this time also come to the stage to report possible problems or report concerns about their Decklists. See the previous section for handling instructions. The product team will use this time to pick up basic land. This Floor Team should use this for a short briefing. Once we reach the end of the 10 minute break and pairings are posted, players may no longer change their basic lands without penalty. Anything Else If there's anything else you have questions about, please don't hesitate to ask!
